Reuters reported that the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the Nagorno-Karabakh region continued to escalate on May 5. An official from the Nagorno-Karabakh region said the number of civilians killed since the fighting broke out on September 27 has risen to 18.
Azerbaijan did not disclose the casualties of its troops, but said that at least 25 Azerbaijani civilians were killed.
Nagorno-Karabakh is a region of Azerbaijan, but it has been under the control of the Armenian minority forces backed by the Armenian government since the end of the Armenian-Azerbaijani war in 1994.
“All parties must stop fighting immediately and find a way to find a peaceful solution,” Stoltenberg told a news conference in the Turkish capital of Ankara.
Meanwhile, President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan declared that the ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh could only occur if the countries acted as intermediaries to ensure the “withdrawal of the Armenian army” from Nagorno-Karabakh.
