The 14-day quarantine requirement will apply to all Japanese returning from abroad. Before making the decision to ban entry from other countries, Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide discussed how to respond to the new variant of SARS-CoV-2 with officials from the Health Ministry.
Suga warned on December 25 that he would enact new measures to prevent the new variant of the virus from spreading. Japan currently has more than 213,000 cases and more than 3,000 deaths due to the Covid-19 epidemic.
The new variant of SARS-CoV-2 has been discovered in Italy, the Netherlands, Denmark, Australia and Germany. This variant is believed to be 70% more infectious than the original strain.
