These are the first EU sanctions on China since the 1989 arms embargo. Although these sanctions are largely symbolic, they mark a tougher policy towards China, the EU towards China.

China’s Foreign Ministry previously warned that Beijing would “react harshly” to any sanctions related to the Xinjiang problem.

Meanwhile, China’s ambassador to the EU, Zhang Ming, spoke out “against interference in the affairs of other countries, against sanctions and against baseless accusations.”

“We ask the EU to consider this carefully. If someone insists on confrontation, we only have one way to move forward, because there is no choice but to fulfill the responsibility of the people of the country.”Zhang Ming wrote on Twitter last week.
