The unfortunate plane was shot down while carrying humanitarian aid and medical supplies to help the Somali government respond to the Covid-19 pandemic. Ethiopian soldiers stationed at a barracks here mistakenly thought it was a “suicide attack” plane because they were not informed about the aircraft’s “abnormal flight path” and because it was flying at a low altitude. .

“Due to the lack of communication, the plane was shot down. The case requires the investigative cooperation of officials from Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya to further clarify, “said the Ethiopian military statement.

Kenyan authorities were surprised by the incident, saying the plane was on a mission to help Somalia respond to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ethiopian and Kenyan soldiers are part of a series of foreign troops deployed to Somalia on the AU peacekeeping mission to confront threats from extremist armed groups.

The accidental shooting occurred at a time of tension between Kenya and Somalia. Last month, Kenya accused Somali troops of carrying out a “provocative” attack across the border. Somalia, meanwhile, accuses its neighbors of meddling in its internal affairs.
