Beginning in early May, the sound of cicadas began to hum in the forests of the Northwest Highlands in general and in the province of Son La in particular. This is also an opportunity for ethnic minorities to use jackfruit and other tools to cross the cicada forests for additional income.
In recent years, from May to June of the solar calendar, people from Chieng Mung commune (Mai Son district, Son La province) invited each other to the forest to catch cicadas. The work is done mainly at night, from 8:00 p.m. at 5:00 p.m. Although the work is hard, it brings an important source of income for Thais here. Because food is made from cicadas that are increasingly popular and sought after by customers.
Sharing about hunting cicadas with a daily report in the Farmers / Dan Viet Electronic newspaper, Ms. Lo Bich Nga, Phat village (Chieng Mung commune, Mai Son district, Son La province) said: “At Cicadas love to stay on branches of coffee trees, pines, mangoes, longan … they reside in groups of 3 to 4. To catch cicadas, I used jackfruit resin, resin from other plants to apply to the small branches of long trees. then attach to their wings.
We often catch ticks at night. The tools needed during the capture process are flashlights, knives, baskets, or plastic bags. One day I caught about 5 kg, then I went to the Na Si market, the toad market near Highway 6 sold for 150,000 – 200,000 VND / kg. “
“The second way can catch cicadas without going to the forest, I cut branches more than 1 meter high to put them in front of the patio. Then I made flashlights, plastic tubes, used formula boxes or those that made a loud, good noise, and then I put a lot of pebbles in the tube to make the cicadas sound. fly back to the park at dusk, then catch with bare hands. This method is slower but does not capture as much as a night scanner, “said Ms Lo Bich Nga, Phat.
In the past, cicadas were just a snack, sometimes ethnic minorities invited each other to catch them as bait. However, in recent years, the demand for people to use this dish has increased, along with the food stalls are also buying more and more, so many people go fishing for cicadas to sell them for profit.
According to Ms. Nga, “I have been collecting cicadas for many years, so I know where to collect many cicadas and which ones are small. One day I went up the slopes with the forest, it takes about 2 hours to catch the ticks, it is normal. Go a little hard, but in return the tick catching income will be higher. Every season (about 2 months) at least 10-15 million, sometimes many times I also earn almost 20 million selling cicadas. Although it is a hunting career, it is a more or less significant income for our people. ”
According to some merchants in the Mai Son (Son La) district, the purchase price of the cicada varies from 150,000 to 200,000 VND / kg depending on the type. Mr. Sa Van Ka, Hat Lot City, Mai Son District, said: “Cicadas make many delicious dishes like fried mites, fried lemongrass, lemongrass with chili, toasted lime leaves… which are very popular. In recent years, the demand for people to enjoy this dish is increasing. Because of that, many ethnic people go out to eat and become professional “hunters” to sell. One day I buy 70 to 80 kg of cicada delivered to restaurants in the city. They are La, Hanoi. “
Cicadas are considered one of the most popular drink items, favored by many men, especially when this dish is fried with lemongrass and chili, and drunk with a little wine and beer. perfect Therefore, cicada specialties became famous in the northwest in general and in Son La in particular, and were chosen by many clients at parties for guests and family.
