“We have decided to suspend flights and enter the UK from South Africa at 9am tomorrow morning after a new strain of the corona virus caused an outbreak in the UK,” Shapps said.

Before that, UK Health Minister Matt Hancock said the country had detected 2 cases infected with a dangerous variant of South Africa’s new strain of corona virus. In South Africa, this variant is believed to be more contagious, stronger in young people, and more resistant to vaccines.

In addition, many people are concerned that the South African variant has many other versions of the transformation that allow it to “reinfect” in recovered patients.

This is the second most dangerous variant discovered in the UK after the first variant recorded last week is 70% more infectious.

“The new variant is of great concern as it is not only more infectious but also more variable than the new strain previously discovered in the UK,” Hancock said.

Scientists are still looking for ways to contain new variants of the corona virus. After the December 23 meeting, the director of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Europe, Hans Kluge, said the agency would discuss testing strategies, reduce infection and other risks.

Meanwhile, on December 23, some countries like France and the Netherlands began to relax their travel restrictions with the UK. France says European citizens who tested negative for COVID-19 can cross the Anglo-French border, while the Netherlands has also said it will lift a travel ban with Britain.

The Swiss government has said it will resume flights to the UK and South Africa so that tourists from the two countries can return home for Christmas. These flights will temporarily resume from December 24.
