Detecting a new variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Vietnam

According to the Pasteur Institute of Ho Chi Minh City, on December 22, 2020, the Can Tho airport received a VN50 flight from the UK to Vietnam with 305 passengers, gathered in Tra Vinh province, 147 people, Vinh Long 137. 17 people in Can Tho city and 4 people in Ho Chi Minh city.

The localities took the first sample and tested and discovered 6 cases, including BN1429-BN1432 (in Vinh Long) and BN1434-BN1435 (in Tra Vinh).

Soon after, the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City evaluated, classified and sequenced the genes. The results have registered 01 case of BN1435 infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus strain, variant VOC 202012/01. This is a new strain that was recently registered in the UK. At the same time, the strain that caused BN 1435 disease also had a D614G mutation, which was the strain that was allowed to spread rapidly 4-5 months ago.

Information from BN1435 is as follows: Female patient (patient), born in 1976, hometown of Tra Vinh province, returned to Vietnam on December 22, 2020 and is concentrating in isolation in Tra Vinh. The patient has a history of hypertension for 10 years, he is in good treatment.

Before returning to Vietnam, the patient was in stable health. One day after entry and isolation, the patient had symptoms of a sore throat, low fever and was transferred to the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City for a positive test on December 24, 2020. At the same time, the Patient was transferred to isolation and treated at the Tra Vinh Hospital for Tuberculosis and Pulmonary Disease with a diagnosis of acute amydal inflammation and decreased clinical symptoms from December 24 to 30, 2020.

On December 31, 2020, the patient had a mild cough, no sore throat, no fever, no shortness of breath, and X-ray images showed a mild baseline lung injury. Currently, the patient is being diagnosed with pneumonia and continues to be closely treated at the tuberculosis hospital and in Tra Vinh province for lung diseases.

For the husband, who lives in the same house as BN1435, currently in the UK, he was tested and also tested positive for SARS-CoV-2.

The Pasteur Institute of Ho Chi Minh City has informed the Department of Preventive Medicine to synthesize and consult the leaders of the Ministry of Health to direct the activities of in-depth research and response to the prevention of epidemics.
