Thousands of Trump supporters from across the United States are expected to gather in Washington on January 6 to protest, as Congress confirms the election results.
Members of Donald Trump’s support organizations, such as Women for America First, StoptheSteal and Proud Boys, are expected to flock to Washington, DC, to further the president’s allegations of voter fraud.
“Our people must take over the grounds and steps of the Capitol, and tell parliament that the election results have not been confirmed,” the StopTheSteal team stated online. “Congress could not confirm the vote of this fraudulent electoral college.”
Trump also twice asked his supporters to meet in Washington this past weekend in a latest effort to pressure Congress not to confirm Joe Biden’s victory.
“See you in Washington on January 6. Don’t miss it,” he wrote on December 28 on Twitter.
The concerned protests will lead to violence, after a similar event on 12/12 attended by the far-right group Proud Boys left some people stabbed and dozens arrested.
Election ballot results in the states showed that Biden had won 306 votes, more than the 270 votes needed to win, and Trump got 232 votes.
In the procedural session of parliament on January 6, Vice President Mike Pence, who holds the presidency of the Senate, will open the electoral votes of each state for the members of parliament to confirm, then declared the winner of the presidential elections.
Trump and his allies plan to “change” the election results by having Republican congressmen petition against electoral votes in battlefield states that are accused of fraud. Trump’s allies in parliament plan to present a list of alternate voters, thereby declaring Trump the winner.
However, this petition must have the consensus of the bicameral parliament to take effect, which is considered impossible because the Democrats control the House, while the Republican leadership in the Senate also opposes it. against this “flip-flop” plan.
Mo Brooks, a state congressman from Alabama, said on Fox News on Dec. 28 that he had received the support of “dozens” of congressmen to challenge the results of the electoral votes.
Meanwhile, Trump and his supporters continue to pressure Pence to unilaterally reject some of the electoral votes in the Biden-leaning states, although the vice president has no such authority.
Republican MP Adam Kinzinger criticized it simply as an attempt by the “president and certain members of parliament” to raise money. “This is a scam and it will disappoint those who believe the elections were stolen,” he said.
A group of Republican lawmakers also filed a lawsuit in Texas yesterday, asking a federal judge to declare Vice President Pence the only one with the authority to confirm or deny the electoral votes of each state. However, election law experts say the petition “will get nowhere” and is a desperate Republican attempt to reverse the election results.
