Follow SCMPThe German government faces a new challenge as the number of protesters on the road protesting the blockade tends to increase. One of the main causes is the spread of false conspiracy theories that has affected people.

Among supporters of conspiracy theories is celebrity chef Attila Hildmann, who accuses the coronavirus of being an “excuse” for the German government to “embed the mind control chip in people through vaccines.” German entertainment star Xavier Naidoo has opposed the imperative to wear a mask and demanded that the government present evidence that Covid-19 actually existed. Meanwhile, a cardinal from the Roman Catholic Church in Germany added his name to a letter identifying the Covid-19 pandemic as a precedent for creating a global government.

With widespread conspiracy theories, tens of thousands of protesters over the weekend took to the streets to protest across the country despite the ban or restriction of large crowds.

They unite with right-wing extremists and conspiracy theories. They gathered to oppose restrictive government measures to bypass Covid-19, fight health experts, and even criticize American billionaire Bill Gates.

In Stuttgart, some 10,000 people participated in the demonstrations and chanted “Freedom”, while 3,000 people took to the streets to open Munich with the slogan “Wear a mask, brainwash”. In Berlin 1,200 people went to protest. Hundreds of others also took to the streets of Mannheim, Cologne, and Dortmund.

Even in Mannheim, protesters threw flares that wounded the police.

German Justice Minister Christine Lambrecht spoke of “alarming” situations when ordinary citizens took part in radical right-wing, anti-democratic protests and conspiracy theories. The Lambrecht official asked people to carefully choose the protests they participated in.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel Steffen Seibert strongly criticized the conspirators at a press conference in Berlin earlier this week. He said that peaceful protests to express different opinions were welcome, but “it is a completely different story when it comes to spreading abstract statements, prejudice or hateful opinions.”

He claims that anyone “who fabricates conspiracy theories only wants Germany to divide.”

According to John Hopkins University (USA), Germany has 173,171 cases of Covid-19 and 7,738 people have died from the epidemic. They are currently the eighth largest epidemic region in the world in terms of the number of people infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
