Chinese officials confirmed that the first case of the B.1.1.7 strain in the country was a 23-year-old girl who returned from the UK in mid-December.

The Centers for Disease Control of China (CCDC) yesterday announced the first record of a case of the highly infectious nCoV strain detected in the UK, a 23-year-old woman in Shanghai who returned from the UK on December 14. CCDC is running a contact trail with this patient.

This person was admitted to the hospital immediately after admission due to some mild symptoms. Chinese medical experts performed genetic tests on the sample on December 24 because “it has a history of travel from England and some abnormal nucleic acid test results.”

The results showed that the nCoV strains in female patients were different from those that appeared in Wuhan and Shanghai. Detailed analysis revealed that it was a super infectious strain B.1.1.7 discovered in the UK.

British officials announced on December 14 the discovery of a new strain of nCoV, with more than 20 mutations compared to the original version and 70% more infectious. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) believes that there is no evidence that B.1.1.7 is more likely to be fatal than previous strains.

Many countries have registered new cases of nCoV infection such as France, Canada, Sweden, Spain, Singapore, Korea … So far, more than 50 countries have banned all flights or have tightened passenger control since Their goal is to limit the spread of this strain of CoV. China also indefinitely halted all direct flights to and from the UK as of December 24.
