A man who appeared in court for manslaughter related to the deaths of 39 Vietnamese in a truck in England described how he left the UK for Romania after the incident.
Georghe Nica, a British Romanian, told the jury: “I was afraid this would happen.”
“I know there will be major investigations. I went home to see my family and my children.”
He was arrested in Germany in January 2020, four months after his death, and extradited to England.
Gheorghe Nica, 43, admitted to being involved in smuggling on October 11 and 18, 2019.
But he denied knowing that the Vietnamese were smuggled on October 22, 2019. He told the jury that he thought he was carrying alcohol or tobacco.
He said he had plans to bring the car that night. At approximately one in the morning the next day, the people waiting for the merchandise asked him what was happening.
He called the truck driver, Mo Robinson, a 26-year-old native of Northern Ireland.
He said Mo Robinson looked scared.
At the moment, Mo Robinson has not spoken of deaths, he said.
But at 1:27 am, Mo Robinson called again.
Mo Robinson said ‘maybe dead body in a truck’.
“I answer, call the ambulance, call the police, don’t move.”
Gheorghe Nica said he drove to his home in Basildon, but no one was there.
During the day, he told his wife to book a plane ticket and then went to Luton airport to fly back to Romania that afternoon.
