The Canadian warship moved from the South China Sea through the Taiwan Strait and continued north, the Taiwan Defense Agency said.
According to Reuters, the Taiwan Defense Agency monitored the activities of warships in the strait and said the situation was normal.
The operation was carried out amid a recent escalation of tensions between mainland China and Taiwan. The Chinese military repeatedly exercises and allows military aircraft to cross the median line in the Taiwan Strait.
In September 2019, a Canadian warship also passed through the Taiwan Strait. American warships also pass through the area regularly, but are often criticized by China. The Chinese military criticized the passage of the US destroyer USS Mustin in the Taiwan Strait in August as extremely dangerous.
Relations between Canada and China have also deteriorated since Canada’s arrest of Huawei Vice President Meng Wanzhou in late 2018. China subsequently arrested two Canadian citizens and charged with espionage, allegedly in retaliation. but Beijing said the two cases were unrelated.
