Prime Minister Johnson instructed the government and met with senior officials about the Covid-19 situation while recovering from nCoV infection.
Speaking at the British government’s daily press conference on April 18, Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick said Prime Minister Boris Johnson was “resting and recovering at Checkers”, his tourist residence in Buckinghamshire, according to The Doctor’s Advice.
“The prime minister contacted the ministers, but mainly with his own office in Downing Street,” said Jenrick.
Sources said that while Johnson was recovering from nCoV infection, after being released a week ago, he was “more involved” in the government’s work, including giving “an order.” . Foreign Minister Dominic Raab visited the Prime Minister in Las Damas on April 17 with several high-ranking officials. The three-hour meeting is the first time Johnson has spoken directly to the Secretary of State and senior advisers since discharge.
It is unclear when the British Prime Minister decided to return to work.
The UK government faces criticism of how to respond to pandemics, including a severe shortage of personal protective equipment for health workers. A recent survey found that government support for Covid-19 treatment has dropped from 68% to 59%.
It currently registers more than 114,000 infections and more than 15,000 deaths from nCoV. Death statistics in the UK only count deaths in hospitals. The actual numbers may be much higher as more people die in nursing homes and homes.
Professor Anthony Costello, from UCL’s Institute of Global Health, in London, said the government responded to Covid-19 too slowly and warned that more than 40,000 people in the country could die from nCoV. According to Mr Costello, the UK needs to conduct large-scale nCoV testing and build appropriate systems to cope with a more intense pandemic outbreak.
