That was Major General Tran Dinh Dung, former Deputy Commander, Chief of Staff of the Border Guard (CPBP). His life is associated with the earth and fire of Quang Tri and all the border regions of the country.
Born in 1953 in the Ba Long War area (now Ba Long Commune, Dak Rong District, Quang Tri) but as a child, Tran Dinh Dung did not know his father’s face. His mother, Ms. Phan Thi Cuc, Secretary of the Ba Long War Zone Women’s Union, died in 1965 when he was 12 years old.

“At that time, the uncles and aunts were afraid of my sacrifice, so they sent them to the unit to approach and protect the leadership of the Party Committee in Ta Rut (Dak Rong, Quang Tri). Everyone thought it was safe and quiet, but actually that was a fierce place, “recalled Major General Tran Dinh Dung, saying,” The B-52 was dropping bombs all day. C-130 is sprayed with a misty chemical poison. Detect commandos as you take the siege, watching and killing our cadres. Besides being hungry. Supplies to the plains were cut off. Forest life sources such as vegetables, fruits, meat, fish, and streams were also destroyed by bombs, bombs, and toxins. Sometimes for months I don’t know what a grain of rice is. The brothers are exhausted, exhausted ”.
The veterans of the guard approached at that time, now finding themselves still say: Tran Dinh Dung was the first person to learn the Pa Co – Van Kieu language and he learned very quickly, every time he met the companions of the village, he asked from cassava , bunch of bananas up to the comrades to conquer hunger. Also due to their reputation, the people provided Mr. Dung with the enemy’s situation, thus deploying protection and fighting the enemy effectively.
In 1970 Private Tran Dinh Dung was admitted to the Party. The preparation for official admission was stopped for a very simple reason: “The achievements in the fight are many, but only the 17 years are not qualified. Wait until the age of 18, the organization will return the Party card ”.
Go north to south
At the end of 1971, Private Tran Dinh Dung was called by his superiors to assign him the task “Protect the leaders of the province to work in Hanoi, combine them to study professionally”.
After half a month of marching, Mr. Dung went to Hanoi and was taken to the city. Hung Yen took a spy message class (now under the General Department of 5, the Ministry of Public Security) urgently for 6 months. At that time, he received the news that his father Mr. Tran Huu Nam, after fighting in Laos, was sent north to work for land reform and in 1971, he was working in Thanh Oai district, Ha Tay . (now Hanoi city). The trip to find his father was only a half day’s walk, but Tran Dinh Dung couldn’t come, because he had to study day and night and especially the secret requirement of the intelligence industry.

In early May of September 1972, Quang Tri was the first southern province to be liberated. Private Tran Dinh Dung finished his espionage course and returned to his hometown. Seeing his superiors take me to the specialized room, Tran Dinh Dung complained, “I went to school to fight again.” In the end, the provincial leaders had to put him in the position of deputy commander of the ANVT reconnaissance team, specializing in the task of “destroying evil to eliminate evil” in the two districts of Hai Lang and Trieu Phong.
Wish for peace
Prior to the signing of the 1973 Paris Agreement, Mr. Dung and his unit occupied the border area in the Trieu Phong district. On January 26, 1973, his unit received hundreds of flags, that night, he arranged the unit to plug. “At 6 am on January 27, 1973, the Paris Agreement officially entered into force. The enemy withdrew to claim the land but we had already installed the flag, asserting control since last night. Their representatives were shocked: “We increased the artillery to stop, why can it still be connected?” Major General Tran Dinh Dung recalled and shook his head: “The night of January 26, 1973, many brothers They were wounded by cannon. However, thinking that tomorrow is peace, the whole unit is also encouraged: Try a little more, put a flag to maintain the land so that our children and grandchildren have land for production, no more suffering for the war ”.
“The nation cannot be at peace if its border is threatened. The protection of national security must be a synergy, it must come from the hearts of the people. If people are not warm enough, no one thinks of the nation or the nation. The task of the border guards, in addition to protecting the border, is to maintain and promote the cause of strengthening that people ”. The wish for peace and unity of Mr. Dung and the ANVT officers and soldiers in Quang Tri province should last for more than 2 years. On September 9, 1975, Mr. Dung and his teammates participated in the last battle at Quang Tri, drove the enemy away from the outposts west of Hai Lang, defeated the last line of defense at My Thuy, laid the flag release in the column. Citadel Flag … On the afternoon of March 19, 1975, Hai Lang, the last land of Quang Tri Province, was liberated. Only then will peace truly return to the land of fire.
The day of reunification was also the day that Tran Dinh Dung first wore his rank over his shoulder. Many people were surprised: “How can I become a lieutenant if I have not studied for an officer?” and they only nodded their heads when they knew: that 22-year-old boy, who had been in the army since he was 15, had been in combat for seven years in a row and at that time in Quang Tri he was a rare man admitted to the Party, a the age of 18.
On the day of reunification, First Lieutenant Tran Dinh Dung entered the Hoan Cat Detention Center (Cua area, H.Cam Lo) to exploit the soldiers of the old regime. Some soldiers and officers who had previously participated in the murder of his biological uncle and mother Tran Dinh Dung would take revenge on him. However, Lieutenant Dung again … borrowed Tam Dao cigarettes from the army, took them away and slowly: “It is all over, whatever you do, your relatives will never live again. The brothers successfully reformed and then returned to production to support their wives and children. The unification of the country is the unification of the hearts of the people ”.
