According to the RTThe fire broke out today, September 10, in an area that was devastated by an explosion a month earlier in the port of Beirut.
Some local newspapers reported that a deafening explosion occurred before the wreckage caught fire.
Lebanese army sources said the fire originated from a stock of tires and oil.
Fire brigades were dispatched to the port. The Lebanese army announced that it would use helicopters to put out the flames from above.
Earlier on Wednesday, firefighters handled another fire that broke out at the site filled with mixed trash, wood chips and tires.
The fire occurred as the Lebanese capital was working to recover from the aftermath of a massive explosion that shook the city on August 4. The port of Beirut, the epicenter of the explosion, was completely devastated and the city of Beirut suffered significant damage.
At least 190 people were killed in the blast, another 6,000 were injured and some 300,000 were left homeless. 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate are believed to have been burned and exploded. This batch of chemicals has been kept in an unsafe warehouse since 2014.
Public outrage forced the Lebanese government to resign. A new prime minister has been appointed but is unlikely to calm the unrest.
