According to Reuters, the airstrike could be the first American retaliation after the US-side strikes in Iraq last week. The measure appears to be limited in size, without increasing the risk of an escalation of tensions.

The airstrike was backed by US President Joe Biden, in retaliation for rocket attacks on US facilities in Iraq.

The Pentagon has also confirmed that the attack was targeting an Iranian-backed militia group in eastern Syria.

Unconfirmed information from Syria says the blasts occurred near Al-Bukamal, a city in the Syrian region of Deir-ez-Zor, near the border with Iraq.

According to Reuters, the decision to launch an attack in Syria, not Iraq, will in part not put too much pressure on the Iraqi government as it conducts its own investigation of the February 15 attack. Many Americans were injured.

It is unclear what damage the airstrike caused and whether there were casualties. In recent years, the United States has repeatedly launched retaliatory military strikes.

The rocket attacks on American facilities in Iraq come as the United States and Iran seek to return to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, an agreement from which the Trump administration previously announced withdrawal.
