Biden banned the mention of Covid-19 by geographic location after the term “Chinese virus”, “Wuhan virus” sparked a backlash against racism.
“Provocative and xenophobic terms endanger Asia and the American Pacific (AAPI) individuals, families and businesses,” US President Joe Biden said in a memo announced on January 26.
“The federal government must recognize that these terms have played a role in promoting xenophobic thinking through the actions of political leaders, including referring to the Covid-19 pandemic by origin. Its geography,” the memo said.
According to Biden, such statements have sparked unfounded fears and persistent stigma against Asian and Pacific Americans, “contributing to rising rates of intimidation, harassment and crime. I hate these people.”
The Biden memorandum requires government departments to ensure that formal documents, statements and actions “do not represent or contribute to racism, xenophobia and intolerance against Americans. Asia and the Pacific.”
The memo did not specify any political leaders, but Biden’s predecessor, former President Donald Trump, repeatedly used phrases like “Wuhan virus,” “Chinese plague” to describe the translation of Covid-19. A week after testing positive for nCoV, Trump said he was “in very good condition” and “I have beaten this crazy and terrible Chinese virus.” Before that, he said that China would “pay a heavy price” due to the pandemic.
In the memo, Biden notes that two million Asia-Pacific Americans are already providers of healthcare and other supportive measures, contributing to efforts to prevent Covid-19 from spreading orchids in the United States.
Asian Americans reported more than 2,600 hate incidents in just a few months last year, compared with a few hundred in most years since 1999, said Aryani Ong, an Asian-American human rights activist and former civil rights attorney.
China has repeatedly expressed anger at Trump’s call and denies that the virus leaked from a laboratory in Wuhan. Beijing is also working to rewrite the history of the origin of Covid-19, arguing that a pandemic could emerge from individual outbreaks in many parts of the world.
