Recently, in many localities of the country, especially in some central provinces, cases of Whitmore’s disease (bacterial disease that feeds on human beings) have appeared, in which deaths have been recorded. Many people are concerned about whether this bacteria can be transmitted from person to person or not.
The disease is not contagious.
Recently, Quang Tri Province General Hospital reported 30 hospitalizations for Whitmore disease caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei. At Da Nang hospital, from the beginning of October until now, he has also received treatment for 28 cases of Whitmore’s disease (also known as cannibal bacteria).
It is noteworthy that consecutive deaths from this bacterium have been recorded in hospital admissions for treatment in the provinces. As in Quang Tri recently, there have been 4 deaths due to this bacteria. Doctors warn that the rainy season is a good time for Whitmore bacteria to grow.
With the increase in cases of Whitmore disease, many people are concerned about whether this bacteria will be transmitted from person to person. In this regard, according to Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Kinh – President of the Vietnam Infectious Diseases Association, Whitmore is not transmitted from person to person. Whitmore bacteria enter the body through open wounds, live scratches … causing widespread disease, leading to serious clinical diseases such as sepsis, local injuries, lung damage …

Dr. Hoang Cong Tinh, Head of the Department of Active Rehabilitation (Hoa Binh Provincial General Hospital) said that recently the department has also received several cases of patients with Whitmore’s disease. The bacteria that cause Whitmore’s disease are known as Burkholderia pseudomallei. This is a disease that is not passed from person to person. However, the disease often progresses very seriously, with high death rates, especially for those with chronic diseases.
Until now, the disease was rumored to be “cannibalistic bacteria”, but in fact the bacteria that cause Whitmore’s disease are not cannibalistic bacteria. This bacterium is present in the soil and in the routes of infection mainly due to the contact of damaged skin with contaminated soil or through the inhalation of dirt particles containing these bacteria by the patient. For those who come into contact with the mud, having scratches or scratches is a risk factor, while healthy people do not have scratches when they come in contact with the mud and wear protective equipment that is not at risk. Cases treated in the hospital often have body injuries and have been exposed to mud.
“Whitmore can be acquired by all people of all ages. However, those with pre-existing chronic conditions like diabetes, chronic diseases related to the lungs, kidneys … the risk of getting Whitmore is high. Upon entering the human body , bacteria can cause infections in varying degrees: local infection (localized), systemic infection (septicemia), septic shock, or multiple failure. Deaths are usually due to late-stage disease, when there is septicemia, septic shock, or multi-organ failure, ”recommends Dr. Tinh.
Easy to kill quickly
According to Dr. Hoang Cong Tinh, when the Whitmore bacteria entered the body, the incubation period could last from 2 to 21 days on average. When the onset of the disease progresses rapidly, after just 48 hours of hospitalization it can be life-threatening without being diagnosed and treated quickly.
It is worth mentioning, the disease is easy to misdiagnose pneumonia, soft tissue skin infections, osteoarthritis, staphylococcal septicemia, streptococci … Subjective psychology with the disease causes many cases of hospitalization. when you are very seriously ill, the risk of death is high.
For Whitmore cases, specific antibiotics should be used immediately after admission to treatment. Antibiotic treatment is not easy when high dose attack antibiotics are used continuously for at least 2 weeks and then antibiotics are used for 3-6 months. Therefore, proactive prevention remains the most important.
To prevent Whitmore disease, the Department of Preventive Medicine (Ministry of Health) has also advised people to actively prevent because there is no vaccine to prevent Whitmore disease.
Consequently, people should limit contact with soil or muddy, heavily polluted water. People who usually work outdoors, are exposed to mud, dirty water, especially after floods, they need protection measures such as the use of shoes, sandals and gloves …
If there is an open wound, ulcer or burn, contact with potentially contaminated soil or water should be avoided and cleaned if necessary. People with chronic diseases such as diabetes, immunodeficiency … are high risk subjects who need care and damage to prevent infections.
Experts also recommend that the signs of the disease are easy to confuse with other diseases. When the body shows unusual signs such as pimples on the skin, dermatitis, fatigue, fever … it should be controlled early to avoid unnecessary complications. Sometimes only with a small scratch, but when exposed to the soil environment, the water containing the Whitmore bacteria is easy to infect and leads to more serious complications such as abscesses, blood infection …
