On December 31, the Ho Chi Minh City High People’s Court rejected the appeal, a 24-year prison sentence for former lawyer Tran Thi Ai Lien (44 years old, from Dong Thap) for “fraudulent appropriation of goods”. and “take advantage of credit to appropriate property.”

Realizing that Ms. Lien was very agitated, the Panel allowed Lien to provide further new evidence, proving her innocence. However, Ms. Lien said that she would use her life to prove her innocence.
According to the content of the trial judgment, taking advantage of her legal profession, Ms Lien met many people, including those who used to hire defendants to protect their interests in some civil disputes. From these relationships, Ms. Lien borrowed money at interest rates of 3% to 12% per month.
When taking out a loan, Ms. Lien used the reason for the loan to allow others to reapply until the bank matured, but she did not actually pay anyone back.

At the same time, Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong N. signed a contract to authorize Ms. Lien to the Cao Lanh City Civil Sentencing Department to receive the amount of 121 million VND. But after receiving the money, Ms. Lien spent her personal expenses and told Ms. N. that she had not received the money yet. When Ms. N. discovered the incident, Ms. Lien returned 71 million dong.

Furthermore, in 2012, Ms Lien was authorized by Ms Duong Thuy L. to participate in a civil case and won a VND 500 million case. Ms. Lien forged the authorization contract to the Cao Lanh Civil Sentencing Department to receive money, but was unable to do so.
Not only that, the defendant Lien also used a number of fraudulent reasons to borrow from Mr. Tran Van P. and Ms. Cu Thi Luu T. in the amount of 2.1 billion VND. After many times collecting debts but being dodged, Mr. P. accused Lien of cheating and taking the property.
With his actions, on May 8, 2020, the Dong Thap Province People’s Court sentenced the defendant Tran Thi Ai Lien to 12 years in prison for “fraudulent appropriation of property” and 12 years in prison for “abuse of trust. “. appropriation of assets. “The total prison sentence received by Ms. Lien is 24 years in prison.
According to the Appeal Panel, Ms Lien committed a fraudulent act to borrow money from many people, but in reality she did not lend to others but to spend, as well as taking advantage of the trust to appropriate the property of others, so the level of appeal thinks that there is no basis to accept the appeal of the accused, verifying the sentence of first instance.
