According to divers operating in Southeast Asia, the wreck they found was the USS Grenadier, one of 52 American submarines that disappeared during World War II.
After the Grenadier submarine (93.5 m long, weighing 1,475 tons) was hit by a bomb from a Japanese plane, the crew had to quickly flee the ship.
Although all 76 people on board escaped, they were arrested by the Japanese military, tortured, beaten and nearly starved to death for more than two years. Four of them did not survive.
According to information from the group of divers, the wreck was located at a depth of 82 meters below the surface of the water in an area of the Straits of Malacca, about 150 km off the southern coast of Phuket city, Thailand.
A group of divers found the wreckage of the ship, including two French divers living in Singapore, Jean Luc Rivoire and Benoit Laborie, Australian diver Lance Horowitz and Belgian diver Ben Reymenants who currently live in Phuket.
Mr. Ben Reymenants is one of the divers who participated in a miraculous and dramatic rescue of 12 children and trained the “Boar” team from Thailand who were trapped in Tham Luang, a large cave in the region. Northern Thailand, 2 years ago.
