The devastating explosion on 4 August in the Beirut port area left 190 dead and 6,000 injured.
Eddy Bitar, a lifeguard, said from the scene: “These signs (respiratory and pulse signs) along with a temperature sensor indicate possible underlying life.”
However, according to Reuters, after hours of digging up the rubble, rescue operations were halted because the building was so unsafe. According to a lifeguard, they need heavier machines to carefully lift debris.
“There is a lot of danger for the team, we have 10 people and it is impossible to risk one,” said Michel el-Mur, a lifeguard.
The rescue team working here includes volunteers from Chile, native Lebanese volunteers and members of the civil defense force.
Information about the rescue team’s signs of life was of interest to many people, some people gathered in crowds around the rescue site. However, they were extremely disappointed when rescue efforts were halted due to a lack of machinery while residents were dying of hope.
