A 25-year-old Vietnamese native becomes California’s youngest mayor

According to the CBS Los AngelesCouncilmember Jocelyn Yow, 25, officially took office as mayor of Eastvale and became the youngest woman of color to serve as mayor of a California city.

Yow is the daughter of a family of Vietnamese and Malaysian parents. She moved to Eastvale in 2011 and was elected to the City Council in 2018. She served as Mayor before officially taking office this year. Yow just became the mother of a 6 month old boy.

“Being the mother of a baby increases my desire to serve my community. The local government will make decisions that affect daily life and where we can see what our people are like. Owner operations,” Yow said.

Yow graduated from Norco College and UC Berkeley. He is currently studying his master’s degree at Harvard Extension. He also served as a local representative to the California State Senate and an assistant in the United States House of Representatives. Yow is also the policy director for IGNITE, an NGO that works to help more and more women get elected and into power.

“It is important that we heed the views of young women and mothers when we make important decisions that can affect families in the communities we serve. The youngest woman of color and one of the few young mothers to become mayors in California, I hope that more young women and mothers will be able to follow her in the future, “Yow said.
