The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) announced on April 3 that the last 61 ships of the second 422 ships congested at the entrance to the Suez Canal passed through the canal on the same day, according to Reuters.
The congestion on the arterial sea route between Asia and Europe occurred from 23.3 when the container ship MV Ever Given ran aground and blocked the canal.
The engineering force took almost a week to move the ship. SCA has opened an investigation to find out why the Ever Given ship ran aground.
Osama Rabie, SCA leader, admitted that the congestion affected international maritime activities, as well as Egypt’s reputation. However, he also prides himself on technical skills and ability to save Egypt ships, saying that 99% of the workforce to help move the Ever Given ship is Egyptian.
President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi pledged to invest to ensure the accident does not happen again. The SCA has requested the incorporation of tugs and dredgers.
According to maritime data firm Lloyd’s List, the Suez Canal congestion hampers $ 9.6 billion in goods a day between Asia and Europe. Egypt loses between $ 12 and $ 15 million in revenue every day. On the other hand, analysts said the incident could lead to the ship’s owner, operator and Egypt being sued by customers.
