Vietnamese consumers called for a boycott of H&M

In response to H & M’s actions related to the “trouble map”, many Vietnamese consumers have voiced their opposition to this fashion brand in Vietnam.

The social network Facebook has formed a group calling for a boycott of H&M. Viet Tu, a client from Hanoi, reacted fiercely on his personal Facebook. He said: “As a long-time H&M customer, I boycott their products, I ask the company to take appropriate action,” he shared on Facebook.

“I heard that H&M officially changed the map after receiving one-way comments. If true, boycott immediately. I support local Vietnamese brands that are cheaper and more beautiful than a western one that defends the map issue, ”said Ms. Le Tu Quynh.

Member An An called: “We still have many other options for our children and families, there is no need to support a brand that ignores Vietnamese consumers and violates independent territorial integrity rights.”

However, at present, consumers cannot find the ‘problem’ map on H & M’s website to verify. Information from foreign news agencies has not yet clearly determined what the specific “trouble” map is.

In Vietnam, H&M opened its first store in Ho Chi Minh City in September 2017. Just 2 months later, H&M continued to open stores in Hanoi. So far, H&M has 12 stores in Vietnam, including 5 stores in Hanoi, 4 stores in Ho Chi Minh City, and 3 stores in Can Tho, Da Nang, and Ha Long.

Previously, international media reported that Chinese authorities said fashion brand H&M (Sweden) had agreed to change the “trouble map” on the Internet after being criticized by Beijing.

According to the AP, the Shanghai government said Internet users had reported “problematic maps” on H & M’s website. So the Shanghai Planning and Resources Department asked the Swedish company to quickly fix the map. After being summoned, H&M “acceded to the request of the Chinese authorities”.

H&M is working to quell China’s ire, claiming that its commitments to the country appear to have failed. H&M has issued a conciliatory announcement in response to the company’s controversies over the discontinuation of Xinjiang cotton. In particular, H&M said that China is “a very important market.”

H&M said it wanted to be a “responsible shopper in China and elsewhere” in the latest announcement posted today. “In addition, the Swedish brand is also willing to work with stakeholders to build a more sustainable fashion industry.

Global crisis

Last week, H&M was at the center of a boycott wave in China due to a statement last year that said cotton produced in Xinjiang province is not used due to human rights concerns. The fashion retailer emphasizes that the current wave of boycotts may overshadow its market activities in China, which remains one of the group’s four main markets.

Amid a wave of boycotts, H&M products quickly disappeared from major Chinese e-commerce platforms such as Alibaba and JD.com. The locations of more than 500 H&M retail stores in China have been removed from the mapping services of Alibaba and Baidu, China’s main search engine. And yet the owners of at least 6 low-level cities forced H&M to close their stores.

As users in Beijing noted, H & M’s searches of Apple Maps on the iPhone or the Baidu Maps app did not return any results. Meanwhile, when searching for stores from competitors with H&M like Uniqlo, the results were displayed as normal.

In particular, when searching on Google Maps, about 12 H&M store locations in Beijing and surrounding areas turned up. Of course, this is accessed through the use of private networks because Alphabet products are currently banned in China.

Not only that, H&M constantly has a lot of problems. The first is the closure of the entire store in South Africa due to a racist advertising mistake. At the time, H&M had an ad that featured a colored boy wearing a sweatshirt with the words “Coolest Monkey in the Jungle” printed across his chest. This announcement even sparked a wave of protests against H&M.

Not only that, H&M in 2018 also witnessed a record clothing inventory of up to $ 4.3 billion due to unsold sales. Many people believe that H&M designs are out of date and cannot compete with other competitors in the market.

By 2020, the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic has caused H&M to close thousands of stores around the world, in the same situation as other fashion brands.
