The Vietnamese automaker plans to build a factory in the US after opening showrooms, service centers and research and development centers.
VinFast establishes showrooms and service centers in California, while the 50-member research office is located in San Francisco in the state. His plan is to sell cars in the United States in 2022.
Answer your question BloombergVinFast CEO Thai Thi Thanh Hai said in an email that the company plans to build a car factory in the United States. But Ms. Hai declined to provide more details about the time and location. The company also plans to sell cars in Canada and Europe next year.
“VinFast’s vision is to become a global smart electric vehicle company, and the US market is one of the first international markets we will focus on. We intend to develop high-end models for the US market,” added the Ms. Hai.
In fact, the North American auto market is not easy to penetrate. Not only because national “giants” like Ford or General Motors (GM) have spent billions of dollars on electric cars, but investors also spend the same amount of money on startups to make electric cars.
Electric vehicle manufacturers, many of which have already launched commercial products, also seized the opportunity. Several American companies have expressed ambition and ability, including Nikola, Lucid, Lordstown, Fisker, Canoo, and Xos.
In 2020, VinFast will sell about 30,000 cars. Expected sales in 2021 are more than 45,000 vehicles. The company will start delivering electric cars produced at the Hai Phong factory to Vietnamese customers from December on the VF31.
The CEO of VinFast believes that the company can win in the US as well as attract customers from other countries to buy cars from an unknown Vietnamese car company, bringing high quality cars with standards, high safety and advanced technology. .
According to Hai, VinFast plans to open 35 showrooms and service centers in California this year. California authorities granted VinFast a license to test autonomous vehicles on public roads. The company aims to deliver the first electric scooter to US customers in 2022.
Ms. Hai didn’t share much about how much the Vietnamese auto company will invest in the United States. VinFast still plans to turn a profit after 5 years of operation, although the Covid-19 pandemic has “made things difficult.”
The VinFast Research and Development Institute, with offices in San Francisco (US), Australia and Vietnam, is developing autonomous vehicle technology, according to Dr. Bui Hai Hung, Director of AI Research (VinAI Research).
Previously, the company planned to launch electric cars at the Los Angeles auto show in November 2020, but the event was delayed, so VinFast’s plan was also canceled. Going to the consumer electronics fair CES 2021 taking place online for Covid-19 also ruined his next intentions.
On January 22, in the domestic market, VinFast presented three smart electric SUVs that use artificial intelligence. The VF31 is a C-segment SUV, electric vehicle version only. The VF32 is a mid-size D-class SUV with the option of an electric or gasoline engine. The VF33 is a large E-class SUV, consisting of an electric version using two permanent magnet electric motors and a gasoline engine.
VinFast’s plan is to take orders this year and deliver the VF31 by the end of the year to Vietnamese customers. Then there are VF32 and VF33.
In the US market, there will only be VF32 and VF33. Specifically, the VF32 will receive orders in the third quarter of this year and will deliver the car in 2022. There is no information on how VinFast will introduce these two models to the US market.
