Siriporn Niamrin, 49, saw a large foreign object washed ashore as she walked along the beach after the storm cleared in Thailand’s Nakhon Si Thammarat province on February 23. Siriporn moved closer to take a closer look and noticed that the object had a fishy smell, and took it home, thinking it might be a valuable discovery. The woman asked her neighbors to check it out and was very surprised to hear that it was ambergris.

At 60cm long, 12cm wide and almost 7kg in weight, ambergris has an estimated value of $ 260,000. To confirm that the object was indeed ambergris, Siriporn and his neighbors partially burned it, causing it to melt and harden after cooling. Siriporn is currently waiting for experts to conclude that it is a real ambergris.

“If I have real ambergris, I can help the community after finding a buyer. I feel very lucky to find such a large block. I asked the city council to come see it,” Siriporn said.

Ambergris is a compound secreted by a sperm whale when a bile duct in the intestinal tract produces a compound to remove large or sharp objects. Then the sperm whale vomits the mucus. The object hardens when floating on the surface of the sea. At first, ambergris had a sour smell, but after it dried, it gave off a lingering sweet aroma, becoming a sought-after ingredient in the perfume industry.

In April 2016, a 1.6 kg block of ambergris in Lancashire, UK, had a sale price of $ 41,777. In November of the same year, three fishermen from Oman found 80 kg of ambergris and sold it for 2.92 million dollars.
