Reuters reported on February 23 that the Dutch Safety Commission was investigating the cause of a Boeing 747-400 crashing into some debris shortly after taking off from Maastricht airport on February 20.

This cargo plane threw metal debris in the city of Meerssen in the afternoon, causing minor injuries to 2 people and damage to some cars.

Witnesses reported seeing fire coming from an engine. The plane then landed safely at Liege airport in Belgium, about 30 km from Maastricht.

Also on February 20, the United Airlines (USA) plane carrying 241 people had to make an emergency landing after debris from the plane’s engine crashed into houses in Colorado.

Debris was found scattered throughout a residential area of the city of Broomfield, Colorado, including the engine trim and fragments of the engine cover. The Boeing 777-200 has returned to Denver International Airport and made an emergency landing safely.
The incident prompted Boeing to recommend “suspending operation of 69 Boeing 777s equipped with Pratt & Whitney 4000-112 engines in service and 59 777s in maintenance” until the FAA has determined that the inspection procedure is adequate.
