7.1 magnitude earthquake in Japan

The 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck northwestern Japan at 11:08 p.m. (9 p.m. Hanoi time) today, causing many buildings in Tokyo to shake.

The magnitude 6 plus earthquake on the Japanese 0-7 scale occurred at a depth of 54 km off the coast of Fukushima prefecture, near the epicenter of the earthquake that caused a tsunami that killed more than 18,000 people in 2011. according to many aftershocks, including a strong 4.7 degree aftershock.

The strong earthquake was widely felt throughout Japan, including four tremors in the capital Tokyo that shook many buildings. Anomalies at the Fukushima nuclear plants were not immediately reported. The operator of the Fukushima nuclear plant said they are checking the status of the facility.

No tsunami alerts have been announced. However, as a precaution, people near coastal areas are advised to move to higher ground.

Local media said the blackout affected hundreds of thousands of homes in the Tohoku region of eastern Japan. The earthquake also spilled dishes from the shelves of homes in the area, but no immediate reports of damage have been reported. Some trains in the area were suspended.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga was called into his office and NHK television said the government would establish a special liaison office to coordinate with the affected areas.

Japan is located in the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of intense seismic activity that spans Southeast Asia and the Pacific Rim.
