Speaking after meeting with senior security officials, Ms Thai stressed that Taiwan has close contact with “concerned countries” about the situation in the Taiwan Strait, according to Reuters.
“I would like to repeat that Taiwan’s consistent stance on cross-strait relations is not to give in to pressure or act hastily when we have support,” said Thai.
Ms. Thai also said that Taiwan wants “meaningful dialogue” with China on the basis of equality and mutual respect, as long as Beijing wants to defuse tensions.
In response, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office once again rejected Ms Thai’s appeal, saying the Taipei government was “distorting reality” and colluding with foreign forces seeking independence. “The current dire situation in the cross-strait (Taiwan) relationship is fully driven by Democratic Party officials,” confirmed the Taiwan Affairs Office. The Progressive Party is currently the ruling party in Taiwan.
This week, both China and Taiwan will celebrate the Chinese New Year. “We also wish the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait a happy new year and look forward to promoting peace and stability on both sides of the Taiwan Strait,” said Thai.
