Most of the Americans questioned supported the Senate in convicting former President Donald Trump and preventing him from returning to government.
In a new poll released by ABC News / Ipsos on February 7, 56% of Senate supporters convicted former President Trump and barred him from being a federal official again during the February 9 trial. Only 43% of those surveyed said the United States Senate should pardon the former president.
If we divide by partisan data, this poll shows that 15% of Republicans who support the Senate condemn and prevent Trump from returning to power, while the figure for Democrats is 92%. For the independent group, 54% support the conviction of the former president and 45% oppose it.
The ABC News / Ipsos poll ran from February 5-6, with 508 respondents from across the country, including Democrats, Republicans, and independent voters.
Compared to the January 2020 ABC News / Washington Post poll of Trump’s impeachment for the first time, the number of people who want the Senate to convict him has increased. According to a poll conducted in January last year, up to 49% of those surveyed said Trump should not be fired.
Trump became the first U.S. president to be indicted twice after the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, which killed 5 people and injured dozens. The Senate of the United States will initiate the impeachment of Trump on February 9, after receiving a clause accusing him of “inciting a riot” from the House of Representatives.
If convicted, the former US president could face a ban from running in the future. However, the likelihood of Trump being convicted in the Senate is slim, as there are more Republicans on his side.
