The White House declined to comment on President Trump’s monumental exit plan.
Trump has declared not to attend Biden’s inauguration, breaking tradition for more than a century. This meant that he was also not in a helicopter to leave the Capitol, traditionally a strongly symbolic moment representing a peaceful transfer of power between the two presidents.
Trump would become the first president to skip the inauguration of a successor since 1869, when defendant President Andrew Johnson refused to take the oath of his rival Ulysses Grant.
Furthermore, Trump has become the only president of the United States to be indicted twice. He passed his first impeachment trial a year ago after the Senate concluded that he was not using his powers to attack rival Biden’s family before the election.
The last time was because of the president’s statements, which allegedly incited his followers to storm the Capitol and cause chaos with five people killed on January 6.
