Due to a defect in his leg alone, for three consecutive years, Dinh Thi Quynh Nga’s application was denied. Currently, she is a director, creating jobs for hundreds of people with disabilities.
The closed “doors”
‘Shining like a tea bowl / Beautiful is beautiful but I lame a leg’ is a funny verse that Ms. Dinh Thi Quynh Nga (43 years old, in Soc Son district, Hanoi) uses to talk about herself.
A small childhood incident left her paralyzed in one leg, her left leg 3 cm shorter than her right leg. He couldn’t walk like a normal person.
“My childhood was sad days,” Nga said of the time she went to school while selling products to help her family. His family had many children, his father was a wounded soldier, he died early, his mother and daughter had to depend on each other.
“I also decided from the beginning, with such a defective body, without education, without knowledge, it would be very painful,” he recalled.

In 1997, Ms. Nga entered the Hanoi College of Education, College of Fine Arts. After graduating from school in 2001, he carried his documents everywhere, but could not find work because many companies and businesses did not want to risk accepting people with disabilities. Ms. Nga applies for all jobs, as a teacher, a worker … but she gets all the shakes of her head.
“I entered the Noi Bai Industrial Park (Soc Son), I knocked on the door and did not know how many companies and businesses but they rejected me from the first round just because I am a disabled person.
Frustrated, every time I go back like this, I cry because I feel sorry for myself. There was even a moment when he “argued bluntly”: “I only have a slight disability in my leg, I can still work like a normal person. How people do it, I will.” But the result is still 0, ”said Nga.
After 3 years, she shelved her dossier, gave up her intention to apply for a job, and focused on self-employment.

In 2007, he returned once again with the desire to find a stable job with the right specialty. “Doing business is quite free but difficult. I feel sorry for when I think I have a degree, how can I not apply for a job? “, Said.
Passionate about teaching, Ms. Nga continued knocking on the door of the Soc Son District Education and Training Department with a letter. In the letter, she expressed her desire to apply to teach at the School for Fostering and Education for Children with Disabilities in the Soc Son district to help children with circumstances like her.
According to information from the district training office, she knew about the upcoming recruitment contest for civil servants.
“I don’t have high hopes, but I still work hard to review. On July 1, 2007, when I received the results from a public official, my happiness broke. In August of the same year I started the days standing on the podium ”, recalls Nga.
In 2009, an Association of Persons with Disabilities was established in the Soc Son district. With efforts to help people in difficult circumstances, Ms. Nga was appointed vice president.
“I already have a job, I can support myself, so I want others to be like that. Furthermore, I realize that many other disabled people are also capable of working. Without a degree, they can do manual labor, ”he said.
So in 2015, Ms. Nga established the Pink Heart Craft Cooperative (Cooperative), creating jobs for people with disabilities. Cooperativa has 6 lines of business and services (incense production, printing, coffee and beverage service, industrial sewing …) and provides accommodation and accommodation to workers with disabilities in the distance.
“What can people with disabilities do?”
“In many cases, I have to go to the lobby to join the cooperative. Not only people with disabilities, their families also do not believe that people with disabilities can work, can have a job. Many families continue to wave: “What can I do with a disability?” Many people even have to come to the factory to see and believe it, ”he said.
Still, Ms. Nga insisted. So far, the cooperative has 38 people working directly in the factories, 40 people working from home. They come from the provinces of Ha Giang, Thai Nguyen, Lang Son … Income depends on the working capacity of each person, on average 3 million / month, the highest is 6.5 million / month.
More importantly, the work has changed their perception and self-confidence.

“His position in the family has changed. Before they were dependent, weak now they have more confidence because they can support themselves. Many people also change from costumes to awareness, speech and confidence to go out and communicate with society, ”shared the director.
The best thing is that, in this environment, they found their own half. The cooperative has made it possible for 10 couples to get together and build a new house.
“I remember most of the deaf and dumb bride in Quang Tri. Through social networks, he found out about the cooperative and asked to work. After many years here, you will have more confidence in yourself. Now you have returned to your hometown to get married and have a stable life ”.
However, there are also cases where Ms. Nga has to say no. For example, a disabled person who lived far away in the cooperative received many jobs, but this person complained and refused.
Ms. Nga was assigned the lightest task: packing, but he too refused due to pain in his hand. She encouraged her to go to the garment factory, told her that bad eyesight couldn’t do it. Finally, Nga advised this person to go back to his hometown and open a grocery store. Because if everyone wants to stay, everyone has to work to stay.
“We only accept people who are enthusiastic about their work, who have a sense of self-reliance. More or less, but everyone has to work to create real products. This is not a place to nurture and depend on the help and support of others. “
Ms. Nga received many accomplishments for her efforts to support people with disabilities. |
According to Ms. Nga, the most difficult problem for disabled workers is exit due to barriers in the client’s psychology.
“Many clients do not dare to buy the products of the cooperative because, according to them, people with disabilities cannot. Buying is just a form of support. Many people have to come to the site for an evaluation. They finally look at the product, they like it and they ask for it. They not only buy for themselves, they also recommend them to family and friends.
In 2020, due to the translation of Covid-19, the business is quite difficult, but the income of the cooperative also reaches 1 billion VND.
“We hope, in the near future, to be able to sell more products. The workers have more money or banh chung, a small gift to go home and celebrate Tet, ”shared Ms. Nga.
Ms. Nga has been a good teacher at the district level for many years; Certificate of merit for city-level initiatives; An example of good people and good deeds in Hanoi in 2017; Certificate of Merit from the Hanoi Women’s Union in 2018; Advanced example of Hanoi city in 2018. In November 2020, he was a typical person honored at the “Silent Brilliant Examples for the Community” commendation ceremony. |
