According to Reuters, 10 senators and Republican elected senators will join Cruz. This is considered a symbolic action, more than likely to reverse the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Cruz’s efforts are at odds with the views of some Senate Republican leaders, who argue that the Senate’s role in confirming the election results is largely ceremonial. These party leaders are still avoiding discussing the results of the upcoming 6-1 confirmation.
In their statement, Cruz, the Texas senator and 10 other senators said they planned to vote against the election results in the states that President Donald Trump accused of fraud.
They argued that the Senate should immediately establish a commission to conduct an urgent review of the election results in these states within 10 days.
“Once completed, each state will evaluate the commission’s results and may call a special legislative session to certify a change in its vote, if necessary,” the group of 11 senators said. .
Still, Cruz’s office said it was unclear which states the senators would target.
Michael Gwin, spokesman for Biden’s election campaign, has criticized the move as a drama without any evidence.
“This move will not change the fact that President-elect Biden will be sworn in on January 20. These baseless claims have been made by Trump’s own attorney general, dozens of courts, and election officials from both parties have been vetted and rejected.” Gwin said.
Based on the electoral college voting results, Biden defeated Trump with a score of 306-232. Trump still encourages Republican members to challenge this result, although there is no mechanism to do so.
