Liver cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the world with more than 782,000 people diagnosed each year. According to the 2018 Global Cancer Record (GLOBOCAN) report, around the world each year around 841,000 new cases of liver cancer and 781,000 people die from this disease. The growing cancer cells affect adjacent normal tissue and can spread to other areas of the liver, as well as to organs outside the liver.
Not all cases of liver cancer have a known cause. Chronic viral hepatitis is a common cause. Eating and drinking moldy food, alcohol abuse, cigarettes … can also cause liver cancer.
Recently, in the website’s health library, Sohu also shared a case of two, father and son, with liver cancer that the cause is related to mold.
Xiaojun is 29 this year, never married. A few years ago, Xiaojun’s mother passed away due to an accident, leaving only two, father and son, Xiao Quan living together. Except for the time when he went to work, the rest of the time Xiao Quan often stayed at home with his father, both of whom also lived extremely economically.
Xiaojun’s health is not good, but lately he has been clearly feeling bad, he couldn’t even do anything, visibly thinner. Xiao Quan simply thinks that he is too tired because he has to work for a living without paying attention to his health. But one day, while working, Xiaojun suddenly fainted from exhaustion and was taken to the hospital.
Initially, the doctor suspected that it was a heart attack or stroke, but after a detailed examination, he discovered that Xiaojun had liver cancer. Xiaojun was hospitalized and his father continued to care for him in the hospital. But his father was also in poor health, often tired. Seeing that, the doctor suggested that she get a medical check-up and found that she also had liver cancer.
Tieu Quan’s father and son did not smoke or drink, and their lifestyle habits were good, but they were found to have the same disease.
Through contact with the patient, the doctor said that something in the patient’s kitchen is the “culprit.” It was the same cutting board that had been used for 10 years that had not been discarded.
Like many other seniors, Tieu Quan’s father is inexpensive, so he didn’t think about having to replace the cutting board that had been used for many years. Although the cutting board is moldy, they wash it, rinse it with boiling water, and continue to use it. In fact, this is very dangerous.
Why can a wooden cutting board used for many years be the cause of liver cancer?
Aspergillus flavus toxins (aflatoxin) are a mold that occurs when cutting boards become moldy. This is a strong carcinogen, although sterilized at 100 degrees C for 20 hours it may not be completely eliminated. This substance is extremely harmful to the liver. Consuming a small amount of aflatoxin (1 mg) for a long time can lead to chronic poisoning and long-term liver damage.
Speaking of this toxin, Dr. Tai Jianjiang, deputy director of Cancer Hospital, China Institute of Medical Sciences, said: If you wonder, where is the dirtiest place in your house? At least half of the respondents will be toilets. In fact, there is one place in the home that needs more attention than the toilet, and those are mishandled kitchen cutting boards! There are more bacteria on the cutting board than in the toilet! We use cutting boards to cut vegetables, raw meat, and fruits every day, but do you know how many bacteria grow on them? It is essential to produce carcinogenic aflatoxins.
Aflatoxin is an important factor in the incidence of liver cancer. Compared to people who are exposed to this poison for a long time, the risk of disease is 80-100 times different! Aflatoxin toxicity 68 times greater than arsenic and 10 times greater than potassium cyanide, has the ability to destroy liver tissue in an extremely serious way. Mycotoxin aflatoxin is a unique type that is harmful to human health and is a very important group of toxins. In 1993, the Cancer Research Organization of the World Health Organization (WHO) classified aflatoxin as a class 1 carcinogen.
So how to clean the cutting board well?
– First wash the cutting boards with detergent and water, be sure to clean the front, side and back sides.
– Then sprinkle a teaspoon of salt on the cutting board, dip the sponge in some water and then wipe it for 30 seconds and then rinse with cold water.
– Mix white vinegar and water in a 1: 2 ratio, put in a jar and sprinkle on the surface of the cutting board. After that, do not rinse, keep it in a well-ventilated place with sunlight and let it dry naturally.
Please note that when you see that the cutting board is black or has grooves on the surface and can no longer be scratched, you need to remove the cutting board.
In addition to wooden boards, wooden toothpicks have been used for a long time and need to be changed regularly.
Chopsticks do not produce aflatoxins, but we often use chopsticks to eat starchy foods like peanuts, corn, these food residues will seep into the cracks of the chopsticks to mold and produce aflatoxins.
There are also types of wooden toothpicks that are used for a long time, after being washed to enter a humid environment, easily generating mold. Therefore, if you use wooden toothpicks, you should change them once every 3 months, not too cheap to harm your health.
