This syndrome is a common genetic disorder in men and is usually not diagnosed until adulthood. About 1 in 1,000 people has Klineifelter syndrome. It is caused by an abnormality in the sex chromosome.
Normally, women have 46, XX chromosomes and men have 46, XY chromosomes. In Klineifelter syndrome, males will carry chromosomes 47, XXY. The excess X chromosome interferes with the normal development of men in the fetus and puberty.
Men with Klineifelter syndrome have some characteristics such as: delayed puberty or puberty; mental retardation, breast enlargement, lack of muscle growth, little or no body hair. In particular, the patient is almost unable to give birth naturally due to underdevelopment of the testes.
Doctors emphasize that about 20-30% of men lucky with Klinefelter can find some sperm when they perform microsurgery to find sperm in the testicles, thus performing in vitro fertilization.
Therefore, doctors encourage couples to have pre-nuptial reproductive health check-ups to detect genetic diseases.
