Indonesian fishermen became suspicious of Chinese dive boats

An Indonesian fisherman picked up an object suspected to be a Chinese Sea Wing unmanned dive boat near the Selayar Islands.

A fisherman named Saeruddin announced that he had recovered the strange object on December 20 in waters near the Selayar Islands in the South Sulawesi province of central Indonesia. He handed it over to the local police, which was then handed over to the Indonesian army for investigation.

The released images show a torpedo-shaped object with two large raised wings and a stable set of wings on the tail. The gold paint on the body of the device appears to have peeled off heavily due to long-term activity on the seabed, revealing the gray casing. The object is 2.2 m long and has a nearly one meter long array of sensors that extend behind the tail.

Social media users quickly discovered similarities between the strange object and the Sea Wing (UUV) unmanned submersible developed by the Shenyang Automation Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. This submarine model was put into use by China in 2014.

The Shenyang Institute of Automation says the Sea Wing is equipped with a variety of ocean research sensors that measure the direction and strength of ocean currents, as well as the temperature, oxygen concentration and salinity of seawater.

This is the third time Indonesian fishermen have discovered a suspicious VUU from China in waters near the country in the past two years. Experts say they could be deployed to secretly survey the sea lanes between the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean, providing valuable information for submarines wishing to traverse the area in a state of diving.
