Archaeologists from Pompeii, buried in the volcanic eruption of 79, discovered a drinks and fast food shop with frescoes that specializes in serving old-fashioned street food. represents passersby in Roman times. Almost 2,000-year-old food remains remain in earthen jars that merchants put in circular holes on the counter. The front of the counter is decorated with brightly colored frescoes, some of which depict the food processing animals available for sale, such as upside-down chickens and ducks. “This is a very special discovery. The first time we excavated a complete food stand,” said Massimo Ossana, director of the archaeological park. The archaeological team also found an ornate copper bowl called a patera, a ceramic pot used to cook stews and soups, a low-necked wine jug, and a two-handled pot.
Pompeii, located 23 kilometers southeast of the city of Naples, is home to 13,000 people when buried under ash and coal gravel under the influence of a volcanic eruption equivalent to many atomic bombs. “Our preliminary analysis showed that the drawings on the front of the counter showed at least some of the food and drink that was sold there,” said anthropologist Valeria Amoretti. Amoretti said there were traces of pork, fish, snails and beef in the containers, suggesting the variety of animals used in the preparation.
Archaeologists have discovered about two-thirds of the ancient 66-hectare city. This ruin was discovered in the 16th century and excavation began around 1750.
