The Japanese government announced today that it will ban all countries to prevent the spread of the CoV strain in the UK.
The entry ban will be in effect from December 28 until January 2021. However, Japanese citizens and foreigners residing in Japan can still return to their home countries and must be quarantined for 14 days.
The Japanese government’s move came after the country found that five people infected with the UK CoV strain were quarantined at international airports. Tokyo also posted a record 949 daily infections today, as Japan is about to enter the New Year holidays, when the influx of people from the capital begins to pour into provinces across the country.
Since October, Japan has allowed residents to enter for at least three months on the condition of 14 days of isolation. After the emergence of the nCoV variant, Japan cheated Great Britain and South Africa from the entry list on December 24 and 26, respectively.
Before making the decision to ban the entry of countries, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga discussed how to deal with the nCoV strain with Ministry of Health officials for about 20 minutes. Suga warned on December 25 that he would enact new measures to prevent the spread of the nCoV strain.
Covid-19 appeared in more than 210 countries and territories, causing more than 80.2 million people to become infected and more than 1.7 million to die. Japan currently has more than 209,000 cases and more than 3,000 deaths caused by nCoV.
