Apple aims to make battery-powered autonomous cars with its proprietary technology by 2024.
Reuters He said Apple’s project to produce autonomous cars is called Project Titan. The project was established in 2014 but was not maximized. At one point, Apple considered stopping and re-evaluating the goals of this project. After that, however, the company continued to implement Project Titan after hiring Doug Field, a veteran employee who used to work at Tesla, in 2018. Field laid off 190 members on the project, recruiting people. better in driverless cars to work.
According to two sources, Apple is now ready for the autonomous car goal and will launch new devices in 2024. Apple’s goal is a car that suits individual users, rather than a taxi model. self-driving to transport passengers like the Alphabet Waymo.
A third source revealed that Apple wants to “radically reduce” charging time and increase the range of activities in the car. For this, the iPhone company is investigating a new battery with “single cell” technology, which reduces charging time, for a longer use time than existing batteries in electric cars.
“Monocell” is a next generation battery design that uses a way to inflate individual battery cells, freeing up space within the battery to introduce more energy storage materials, for longer operating times. Additionally, Apple is reportedly testing a new battery chemistry called lithium iron phosphate (LFP). This is a material that does not overheat, so it is safer than current lithium ion batteries. “It’s the next battery level,” emphasized the source. “It’s like when you first saw an iPhone.”
Apple declined to comment.
Building electric cars is a challenge for any company, including companies with “tons of money” like Apple. Previously, it took Tesla’s Elon Musk 17 years to create the “empire” of electric cars today.
It is not yet clear which company will play the role of assembling electric vehicles for Apple. A company specializing in making traditional cars is likely to take over the process, sources say.
Most of today’s auto assemblers require orders for 100,000 vehicles per year. Apple needs to guarantee a minimum quantity. “It will be a challenge for a new company to enter the auto market like Apple,” said one expert.
Following the news that Apple makes electric cars, its shares rose 1.24%. Meanwhile, Tesla shares fell 6.5%.
