“We have to control the situation … Because the new variant spreads faster, it is very difficult to control until we implement vaccination,” Hancock said December 20 on Radio. Sky News.
He remarked that although the United Kingdom has already begun to vaccinate “it will be difficult in the coming months.” The UK health authorities have planned to vaccinate the entire population from April 2021.
However, Minister Hancock said Britain might not need a national blockade. “It is not necessary. One of the reasons we are restricting travel at level 4 is to prevent this new variant from spreading,” he explained.
Before that, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on December 19 an order to blockade the capital London and most of the south-eastern region of England, placing a third of the British population under Level 4 restrictions.
The blockade regulations, which came into effect on December 20, are the strictest measures taken by the UK Government since the introduction of a national blockade from March 2020. The British Parliament is due to reconsider the blockade on next month.
According to the newspaper guardianOn the night of December 19, thousands of people packed their belongings from “escape” from London and the southern regions before the blockade went into effect. Hancock criticized this as “completely irresponsible.”
“Medical leaders have made it very clear that everyone must remove their belongings,” said the British minister, calling on everyone to stay in London. Mr. Hancock also recommended that people wear masks and maintain social distance to prevent the spread of the epidemic.
