The US Navy announced that the guided-missile destroyer USS Mustin had passed through the Taiwan Straits during normal operation on December 19, in compliance with international law, according to Reuters.
“The transfer of the USS Mustin to the Taiwan Straits demonstrates the United States’ commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific,” according to the announcement. This is the twelfth voyage of ships of the United States Navy across the Taiwan Straits this year.
In a statement, the Chinese military said its air and naval forces had “followed and watched” the destroyer USS Mustin.
The Chinese military has criticized US activities like these that threaten the peace, causing tension over the Taiwan issue “because Washington fears stability in the Taiwan Strait.”
For its part, the Taiwanese defense agency said the USS Mustin was heading south and that defenders had also observed the movements of US warships and that “the situation remains normal.”
