The first major snowstorm this winter has prompted officials in affected areas to urge more than 50 million people to stay home.
New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo has declared a state emergency in 18 counties. Cuomo said there were more than 9,000 power outages, 600 accidents and 2 deaths on Dec. 17, according to the Associated Press.
“If you don’t need to go out, please don’t go anywhere” – called Mr. Cuomo.

Jason Garnar, an official for the Broome district in the city of Binghamton, New York, said snow falls at a rate of 10 to 12 cm per hour. “This is the fastest snowfall I’ve ever seen,” Garnar said.
In the state of Pennsylvania At least 2 people were killed in a continuous accident due to bad weather, involving between 30 and 60 cars on an interstate highway.
Meanwhile, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker announced on Twitter: “Due to heavy snowfall and difficult travel, drivers should stay home during storms if possible.” The AP news agency said that as of the morning of 17 to 12 US time, the city of Boston, Massachusetts, had registered more than 23 cm of snow, breaking the previous record of 16.3 cm in 2013.

Reuters reported that the heaviest snowfall as of December 17 was 114 centimeters in the area near Binghamton, New York state. The amount of snow that falls in central Pennsylvania is 102 cm.

In areas near the coast, including the southern state of New Jersey and Cape Cod, Massachusetts, the storm brought rain, high winds and flooding. Dozens of flights were canceled at major airports, including 123 at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.

However, many people showed great interest in this heavy snowfall. “Great, Christmas is a must,” said Xicheng Cai (28), who lives in Boston’s Seaport district.
“I like this. It’s lucky that I work from home so I don’t have to drive anywhere,” said Sara Boxell, who lives in South Boston.
