US and Chinese military officials should have had a regular dialogue on December 14-16 under the Military Navy Advisory Treaty (MMCA).
Since 1998, officials from the two countries have met regularly to discuss maritime security within the framework of the MMCA, to reassess incidents between the two militaries and to engage in dialogue to prevent similar incidents. .
However, China’s sudden absence from this meeting caused the US side to strongly condemn it and say that Beijing lacked respect.
In response, Chinese naval spokesman Liu Van Thang said the Chinese had provided suggestions for the meeting since Nov. 18, but the United States insisted on keeping the unilateral agenda, according to Reuters.
According to Mr. Liu, the US side arbitrarily shortened the agenda, changed the nature of the meeting, and took steps to force China to participate before the two sides reached an agreement on the issues.
Mr. Liu said that China attaches great importance to bilateral dialogue on maritime military security, but believes that the United States is fully responsible for the failure of the meeting.
“This will be a reminder to all countries when they want to come to an agreement with China,” said Admiral Davidson.
