Officials are investigating the students’ travel and infectious routes, suspecting the group may have infected each other with nCoV from close contact in the dormitories.

To date, the other 300 people living in the dormitory have been assessed.

In recent weeks, Korea has seen a series of Covid-19 outbreaks in nursing homes, churches, schools, and other multi-functional facilities, with around 1,000 new infections per day.

The number of new infections on December 16 rose to a record 1,078 cases, bringing the total number of cases nationwide to 45,442. The current second-tier social distance measure doesn’t smooth the curve and may need to be raised to 3 when necessary, South Korean health officials admit.

Consequently, gatherings of 10 or more people will be banned compared to the current maximum of 49. Schools will be completely closed and companies must allow non-essential staff to work remotely.
