‘I should demand that teachers work a full eight hours at school’

If teachers are forced to complete their professional work at school, they will be able to dedicate themselves fully to their families after school.

As a former teacher, I would like to contribute a few things to help overcome the shortcomings of primary education:

1. About the curriculum

Need to reduce the load of learning content. First graders just need to know how to read and write. The subjects Ethics, History, Geography … should be integrated into the reading exercises, not divided into many subjects. With grade 2 you only have to pay attention to addition and subtraction, the rest continue to teach students to learn to read, integrate other subjects as in grade 1, but if it is possible to improve a little, it is not overloaded. The goal is that by the end of 2nd grade, 100% of the students will be literate. In fact, because to run the program, there are fifth graders who still cannot read fluently, but still “can” go to class.

In addition, we also need to find a stable curriculum content, which can be used in 5 to 10 years. Brothers and sisters in a family can teach each other. Constant reforms make it impossible for parents to keep up to guide their children, much less the adaptability of students. As a result, everyone is overloaded, they can not only give me lessons, parents who work all day still have to tutor their children at night.

2. For teachers

We need to arrange for teachers to guarantee eight hours in school every day. When class is over, they can stay in the office to prepare lesson plans, explore and improve teaching methods. Thus, at the end of the working day, teachers can go home and care and play with their children wholeheartedly like many other professions. Today, many teachers returning home have to diligently prepare lesson plans and teach more late into the night. So you no longer have the mind to study good teaching methods?

When it is not possible to teach students who are unsure of the lesson, teachers find ways to assign homework to students and shift the responsibility to parents who have no pedagogical experience. Although every year there are more reforms of the curricular contents and learning methods. Making sure the teacher stays in school for eight hours is the way my son’s school in Philadelphia is doing.

3. With students

They don’t have to learn more. Only those who really do poorly at school need to “force” themselves to teach in the afternoon and pay money. For the rest, take time for your children to do their homework in class or study in the afternoon.
