Barr is the second minister to leave the Trump administration after November 3, the time of the US presidential election. According to Trump’s announcement on Twitter, Assistant Attorney General Jeff Rosen will become Acting Secretary and hand over the position of Assistant Attorney General to Richard Donoghue.
As if to refute rumors about Barr’s firing, Trump claimed that his relationship with Barr was “very good”, that Barr had “successfully completed the task.”
He also described the meeting between the two at the White House before the resignation announcement as “very nice.”
President Trump then posted the full letter of Barr’s resignation on Twitter. The letter said Barr would be leaving the Justice Department before Dec. 23 and thanked Trump for his appointment.
According to Reuters, the letter was released by the Attorney General’s Office shortly after Barr gave Trump a brief report on the Justice Department’s review of the fraud allegations in the 2020 elections.
Barr confirmed that although he was about to leave the Justice Department, the agency would continue to review the allegations.
In the letter, Barr also praised what he called President Trump’s “historic record,” noting that the current president has helped boost the economy, bolster the military and curb illegal immigration.
Barr’s political fate has been a hot topic in the United States since he announced last week that a Justice Department investigation has found no signs of major fraud in the presidential election.
Trump’s legal team immediately criticized the statement, accusing Barr of failing to conduct a proper investigation.
