Russia: When will the dream of two super carriers come true? | World

“Weapons of imperialism”

Discussions about the capabilities of aircraft carriers in Russia have been going on since the early 2000s, when the national defense industry began to recover. However, the issue is not outside the public statements made by representatives of the Navy and blueprints. The history of building an aircraft carrier is not an easy one.

Since 1953, Soviet naval commander Nikolai Kuznetsov has been calling for the construction of aircraft carriers. He even approved a project to build a light aircraft carrier (Project 85). There were plans to build at least eight of these ships, the first to be launched in 1960.

However, in 1955, the naval commander was disgraced and dismissed, and his successor, Admiral Sergei Gorshkov, did not share the ambitious ideas of his predecessor.

The experience of the United States using an aircraft carrier during the Korean War (1950-1953) and Vietnam (1964-1975) as a floating base and not fighting at sea, failed to convince the leaders of the Navy. Soviet Union on the need to build them. Considering that the aircraft carrier was “the weapon of imperialism”, Soviet naval commanders depended solely on cruisers and submarines.

However, due to the need to confront American submarines equipped with Polaris ballistic missiles with a range of 2,000 km, the Soviet Union had to build a Moscow-class anti-submarine cruiser, carrying 14 Ka-25 helicopters. .

But the helicopters could not provide adequate air support for naval operations and had to be replaced by next-generation ships: the Project “Krechet” heavy cruiser, possibly carrying fighter jets to take off and land vertically. From the mid-1970s to the late 1980s, six of these ships were put into service: “Kiev”, “Minsk”, “Novorossiysk”, “Baku”, “Admiral Kuznetsov” and “Varyag”.

The US leader in the number of aircraft carriers is the United States. Throughout history, 80 US aircraft carriers have sailed the oceans; Today, 11 ships of this type are in service. The Russian Navy currently has only one ship of the same type – the cruiser carrying the “Admiral Kuznetsov” aircraft. The fact that Russia has few aircraft carriers is understandable: Moscow adheres to a defensive military doctrine and that an aircraft carrier is an offensive weapon.

However, in recent years, the leader of the Russian Navy has said that it is necessary to strengthen the fleet of aircraft carriers. So, in 2015, the aircraft carrier project “Storm” was unveiled during the Army-2019 exhibition.

The estimated parameters of this giant ship are the following: displacement 100 thousand tons, length – 330 meters, width – 40 meters, draft – 11 meters; The maximum expected speed is 30 knots.

The ship can carry a maximum of 90 fighters, with an aerospace ammunition capacity of up to 2,500-3,000 tons. In terms of design features, Storm is quite similar to the latest American aircraft carrier Gerald Ford.

In terms of capacity, the ship will be able to perform a variety of missions in oceans far from the Russian coast: attack targets on land and at sea, with the help of an air combat group, or use its own air defense and defense systems. missiles, support amphibious operations, as well as control and coordinate actions with a formation of aircraft carriers.

Five years have passed since the launch, so far there has been no progress in the implementation of the aircraft carrier project. Many thought it would be an overwhelming ambition. However, the military says the launch of the Storm project should not be before 2025. Shipbuilding could take 8 to 9 years. The preliminary cost is estimated at 350 billion rubles.

The minor ship

At the IMDS-2019 International Maritime Defense Fair held in St. Petersburg, another project was presented – the “Manatee” aircraft carrier.

The “manatee” is considered a less expensive alternative. The design characteristics of “Manatee” are as follows: displacement of 90 thousand tons, length 350 meters, speed 30 knots, estimated useful life of 50 years.

The Manatee is nuclear powered and carries 60 heavy fighters and early warning aircraft. Aviation ammunition: 1,600 to 2,000 tons. Other parameters are similar to “Storm”.

Manatee, like the Storm, will be the official aircraft carrier. Both projects take into account export patterns. Compared with “Storm”, “Manatee” cheaper, there will be certain advantages in the export trade.

The Russian Navy will be equipped with hypersonic nuclear weapons.

Skeptics are beginning to argue over whether Russia, currently on a tight budget, needs an aircraft carrier: By the most conservative estimate, the Manatee-class ship will cost its treasury $ 5 billion. AMERICAN DOLLAR. Even considering the many out-of-budget financing options, the cost of operating an aircraft carrier will become a headache for the Russian Navy.
