For the first time, the Vietnam men’s soccer team finished the year among the 93 strongest teams, according to the FIFA standings in December 2020.
According to the announcement on the evening of December 10, Vietnam broke the old record, position 94, in December 2019. Since then, Park Hang-seo teachers and students have not played any matches due to Covid-19. But Vietnam still moved up a notch, ranking 93rd on the Madagascar team.
Madagascar lost to Burkina Faso in a friendly match on October 13 and fell one place to 93. They then lost and drew against Côte d’Ivoire in the African Championship qualifiers on November 12 and 17. then it dropped one step to 94th.
Vietnam’s record ranking in FIFA is 84, in September 1998. But, in December 1998, Alfred Riedl’s teachers and students fell to 98th place.
In the FIFA rankings in December 2020, Vietnam still ranked 14th in Asia and number one in Southeast Asia. Thailand ranks second in the region, ranked 111 by FIFA, 18 places behind Vietnam.
The world leader continues to be Belgium, followed by France, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Spain, Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico and Italy.
Vietnam will play two friendly matches without FIFA points in December 2020, both against Vietnam U22 on December 23 in Cam Pha (Quang Ninh) and on December 27 in Viet Tri (Phu Tho).
