Philippines: mayor on shameless “blacklist” photo

In a speech on the night of 7 to 12 (local time), Mr. Duterte apologized to the family of César Pérez, mayor of the city of Los Baños in the province of Laguna. Mr. Pérez was shot twice in the head by unidentified armed men in the city hall on the night of December 3.

“That list is not mine. This list is compiled based on information from intelligence reports from the anti-drug forces, police and military. I apologize if your name is on the list. But actually most of the people on the list are involved in drugs. Perhaps he is an exception “- news agency Reuters quoted Mr. Duterte.

Mr. Pérez is not the first mayor killed on the list. In October 2019, a mayor on the island of Mindanao was ambushed and shot dead by gunmen while being transported to the prosecutor’s office in Cebu City.

Last year, President Duterte’s office released a list of “drug politicians” ahead of the May midterm poll. According to a United Nations report last June, tens of thousands of people may have lost their lives in the Philippine drug war amid “virtually unpunished” law enforcement and high-ranking officials who incite violence.

The Philippine government has called this an unfounded charge.
