The relationship between the United States and China is considered to be at its worst in decades with conflicts from trade and security to human rights and COVID-19.
On December 4, a Chinese state news channel announced that relations between the two countries had gradually followed “a dangerous path.”
“Both sides should work with goodwill and faith to get relations back on track, as well as to really improve relations. I don’t think China should do anything just to appease anyone. Mr. Thoi speaks via video during the annual conference of the Sino-American Research Institute (ICAS).
Relations between the two countries rapidly deteriorated in July, after China closed the US Consulate General (Consulate General) in a city southwest of Chengdu. This was a move in response to the closure of the Chinese Consulate General in Houston, Texas.
At the meeting, the chairman of the National Committee on US-China Relations Steve Orlins asked Cui about the possibility of reopening the consulate in Chengdu after Joe Biden became the owner of the White House in January. In response, Mr. Thoi said that this case should not be ruled out.
“I said we did not begin the closure of consulates. We are not the first party to ask international journalists to leave the country. We do everything in response to US action. The US government is ready to turn around, we are ready to consider it ”, emphasized the Chinese ambassador.
However, Orlins said that Beijing has unilaterally taken measures that are detrimental to American interests. For example, China has banned three major US newspapers, as well as the social networks Facebook, Google, YouTube, and Twitter. On this point, Mr. Orlins stated that the United States never responded.
“There are provocative words. If you look at what happened last year,” Cui replied.
